\r\nI used to live around the corner from Herdsman Lake and I’d had my eye on this particular location for a while. After endless days of blue skies, I heard the distant rumble of thunder and glanced out of the window to see the trees and rooftops glowing under an ethereal orange sky. Grabbing my camera, I raced out of the front door and found the lake bathed in a glorious warm light.
\r\n
\r\nAfter composing the photograph, it was down to luck as to whether the lightning would strike during the half second exposure. As the thunder grew louder, I became acutely aware that standing next to a metal tripod probably wasn’t the brightest idea, so it was quite a relief to finally capture one of the more impressive cloud-to-cloud strikes moments after a rain cloud burst open on the left of the frame.

\r\nThis is one of my favourite images of the year. I love the way the three small rock pools each reflect a different element of the photo like the warm yellow of the sand hills, the subtle pink clouds and the cool blue sky. But what makes the image really special to me, is that the natural lines of cloud, rock and water emanating from each of the corners all lead the eye to the lightning strikes on the horizon.

\r\nWhen I composed this image, the beach was quite dry and was not reflecting the colourful clouds, so I had an anxious few minutes wait hoping a large wave would wash in before the gorgeous sunlight was obscured by cloud. Thankfully, a big wave rolled in on time and the soaked sand began to shine. Further large waves followed, until one finally washed over the rocks on the right.
\r\nAs it flowed back into the gully, the frothy surf was dispersed by a pool of water that glowed from the fractured reflection of the golden clouds above.

The scene was complete when crepuscular rays streamed down through the ever increasing gaps in the clouds.

One of my favourite ways of doing this is by implementing visual echoes throughout the image where elements of the foreground are mirrored in the clouds. I composed this image so the patch of yellow cloud echoes the shape of the central rock and waited until a large incoming wave moved diagonally across the frame bridging the rocks and cloud by creating a zigzag pattern that flows from the foreground to the top left of the frame.

After setting up the camera on the tripod, I had a tense wait hoping that a large wave would roll in before the sunset faded. A few hours earlier, I’d witnessed a drab sunset over the rocky North Cottesloe shoreline and was aware that I’d probably missed an opportunity to create something a bit different. That nagging feeling of something left unaccomplished remained with me for the rest of the evening, but as I lay with my eyes closed in that netherworld between semi-consciousness and sleep an idea formed in my head and woke me with a jolt; why not try overexposing the image at twilight to create a smooth textured, high-key image with a cool blue hue?

\r\nI went back the next evening and came up with this. I usually give my photographs perfunctory titles as I prefer the viewer to reflect on the image unencumbered by any ideas imposed by me, but on this occasion I think the title is quite apt.

A five second exposure helped smooth out the water flowing into the two channels creating another triangle with a point in the centre of the image.

\r\nA sea haze helped diffuse the glorious warm light and ensured there were no harsh shadows between the rocks, while an 0.8 second exposure helped bring some life to to the limestone gully as it captured the motion of the water flowing back to the sea.

As the tide slowly came in, I had plenty of time to compose the image and wait for a big enough wave.

\r\nEventually, a wave poured over the rocks but after taking the photograph I felt something tangled around my foot and clinging to my skin. I glanced down thinking some seaweed must have washed into the channel, and got huge surprise to see an octopus wrapped around my foot holding on for dear life as the water rushed around us.

\r\nIn this photograph, I tried to capture the essence of the 15th century cottage while conveying how modern life had encroached on it, causing a loss of identity over the past six centuries. To show how the busy road hurried people straight past, I included the arrows circling the mini-roundabout to help symbolise hectic, modern life. I used a neutral density filter to slow down the shutter speed and the resulting exposure of 8 seconds gave the passing cars plenty of time to get down the road. This was important as I wanted the light trails to draw the viewer into the picture and down the road to emphasize that it was a sense of place, and not just traffic, that had passed the house by.
